Bottom line: Hydrow is worth it if the classes are what will get you rowing; you're paying mostly for content, about $600 a year on top of the machine.

Hydrow is the rowing machine people think of when they think "Peloton for rowing": a big touchscreen, classes filmed on real water and led by Olympians and other elite athletes, and a monthly membership. It's also one of the most expensive ways to row at home. Whether it's worth it comes down to one question: will the classes make you row more often than you would otherwise?

Here's what Hydrow actually costs, what you get with and without a membership, how the three models differ, and what to buy instead if the answer is no. Specs and prices come from hydrow.com and are linked in the tables.

What a Hydrow really costs

Hydrow's membership is $50 a month for the whole household. At list prices:

Rower (list)1 year3 years5 years
Hydrow Wave$1,995$2,595$3,795$4,995
Hydrow Origin$2,195$2,795$3,995$5,195
Hydrow Arc$2,295$2,895$4,095$5,295
Concept2 RowErg (for comparison)$990$990$990$990

When we checked, all three Hydrows were on sale (Wave $1,845, Origin $1,745, Arc $2,195), and sales are frequent. Even so, the membership is the larger cost after about three years.

What you get without a membership

Hydrow is clear that its rowers are meant to be used with a membership. Without one, the machine runs in Just Row mode. According to Hydrow's own explanation:

  • Available: adjustable drag, on-screen rowing metrics, "Hydrow 101" intro videos, and Bluetooth heart-rate monitors.
  • Not available: live and recorded workouts, music and workout audio, saved stats or progress history, the leaderboard, and streaming through the mobile app.

In other words, a Hydrow without a membership is a quiet rower with a basic display that forgets every workout. If you might cancel after a year, factor that in.

Wave vs Origin vs Arc

All three use Hydrow's electromagnetic drag, take users up to 375 lb and inseams up to 36 inches, and run the same classes on the same membership. The differences are physical:

  • Wave ($1,995 list): 80 × 19 inches, 102 lb, 16-inch screen. Upright storage needs the $190 Vertical Anchor.
  • Origin ($2,195 list): 86 × 25 inches, 145 lb, 22-inch screen. Upright storage needs the $80 Upright Storage Kit.
  • Arc ($2,295 list): 86 × 25 inches, 147 lb, 24-inch screen. Same $80 kit.

Unless the bigger screen matters to you, the Wave gets you the same classes in a smaller, lighter machine for less. If the Origin is on sale below the Wave's price, as it was when we checked, the Origin's bigger screen becomes the better deal.

When Hydrow is worth it

  • You've bought fitness equipment before and stopped using it, and you know guided classes keep you going.
  • You want a quiet machine with no fan noise.
  • More than one person in the house will use it, since the membership covers everyone.
  • You'll use the off-rower classes too (strength, yoga and Pilates are part of the membership).

When it isn't

  • You'd follow a written plan or a free app anyway. A Concept2 plus our beginner plan or HIIT workouts covers it.
  • You want comparable numbers. Hydrow's readings aren't calibrated to Concept2's standard, so you can't compare a 2K with college recruiting times or other rowers.
  • You're over 375 lb, or have an inseam longer than 36 inches. The Concept2 (500 lb in its own testing, 38-inch inseam) or Ergatta Luxe (500 lb, 40-inch inseam) list more room.

Peloton's rower is now sold as the Row+, listed at $3,495 on Peloton's site when we checked, which makes it more expensive than any Hydrow.

The bottom line

A Hydrow isn't a better rowing machine than a Concept2; it's a different product. You're paying for a class platform. For the right person that's money well spent, because a rower you use beats a cheaper one gathering dust. Be honest about which person you are.

Verdict

Hydrow is worth it if the classes are what will get you rowing; you're paying mostly for content, about $600 a year on top of the machine. If you'd row on your own with a free app, a $990 Concept2 does the rowing part for a fraction of the cost. If you do buy a Hydrow, the Wave is the sensible choice unless you specifically want a bigger screen.
