Water rowers are popular for home use for three reasons: the sound of moving water is far quieter and more pleasant than a fan, the resistance rises naturally with effort like it does in a boat, and the wooden frames look at home in a living room. Most of them also stand upright when you're done.

This guide covers three water rowers whose manufacturers publish full specs: the WaterRower Original, the Ergatta Luxe and the Ergatta Lite. Every number comes from the maker's site and is linked in the table.

How water resistance works

A paddle wheel spins inside a sealed tank of water. The faster you drive it, the more water it has to move and the harder it pushes back. There's no resistance knob to set; your effort sets the load. WaterRower calls its design the WaterFlywheel. Some water rowers let you adjust the water level slightly to change the feel; check the manual for your model before changing it.

WaterRower Original

From $1,199 · no subscription

WaterRower has made this design since 1988, and the Original Series is handmade in Rhode Island in several hardwoods. The only difference between models is the wood: oak and vintage at $1,199, club and shadow at $1,299, cherry at $1,499 and walnut at $1,699. It's 82.25 inches long, weighs 67 lb and takes users up to 330 lb.

The S4 monitor shows the usual metrics and now has Bluetooth built in, so it connects to WaterRower's free Connect app and third-party rowing apps without an add-on. For classes, WaterRower sells a CityRow touchscreen upgrade.

Choose it if: you want a quiet, good-looking rower and don't need a screen.

Ergatta Luxe

$2,499 list (on sale for $2,199 when we checked) · $468/year membership

A cherrywood water rower with a 21.5-inch touchscreen. Ergatta's workouts are built as games and races rather than instructor-led classes. The Luxe has the most generous fit here: 500 lb capacity and a 40-inch inseam, with a 12-inch seat that an optional High-Rise Kit lifts to 20 inches. It weighs 106.5 lb with water and needs 8 ft of floor space and a 7.5 ft ceiling to store upright. Ergatta covers the frame for 5 years (parts 3, touchscreen 1).

Choose it if: you want built-in workouts on a water rower, or you're too big or tall for the others.

Ergatta Lite

$1,699 · $468/year membership

A smaller oak version with a 17.3-inch screen and the same workouts as the Luxe. It's the lightest machine here at 40 lb empty and 72 lb with water, needs 7 ft of floor space, and stands upright with a 7 ft ceiling. The trade-offs are a 320 lb capacity, a 38-inch inseam limit and an 11-inch seat with no high-rise option.

Choose it if: space is tight and you want a screen.

Water rower vs Concept2

If you're choosing between water and air, the deciding questions are noise and numbers. A Concept2 is louder but cheaper at $990, and its readings are comparable with every other Concept2, which matters for training plans and recruiting. See Concept2 vs WaterRower for the full comparison, or best home rowing machine for picks across every type.

What about cheaper water rowers?

There are water rowers under $1,000 from brands sold mainly on Amazon. We haven't included them because their published specs are often incomplete or inconsistent between listings, and this guide only uses figures we can check on the manufacturer's site. If you're shopping in that range, compare the user weight limit, the rail length against your inseam, and the warranty before buying.

Verdict

Buy the WaterRower Original unless you specifically want workouts on a built-in screen. It's the cheapest of the three, needs no subscription, and its free app and Bluetooth monitor cover the basics. If a screen and game-style workouts are what will keep you rowing, the Ergatta Lite is the better value and the Luxe is the one to get if you're over 320 lb or have an inseam longer than 38 inches.

Frequently asked questions

›Are water rowing machines better than air rowers?

Neither is better; they suit different rooms. Both get harder as you pull harder. Water rowers are quieter and many people prefer the sound and look, while air rowers like the Concept2 are cheaper, lighter, and give readings that are comparable across machines.

›Do water rowers need a subscription?

The WaterRower doesn't; its S4 monitor and free Connect app work without one. Ergatta's game-based workouts are part of its membership, listed at $468 a year.

›Can you change the resistance on a water rower?

On a water rower, resistance rises with how hard you pull, the same as in a boat. Pull harder and the water pushes back harder.

›Which water rower is best for tall people?

The Ergatta Luxe lists the most generous fit of the three: a 40-inch inseam (or 6 ft 8 in) and 500 lb capacity. The Ergatta Lite lists a 38-inch inseam. WaterRower doesn't list an inseam limit on its Original Series page.
